 About Race - Elite Athletes 2

Defending champions and current record holders for the marathon and half marathon event will automatically be granted Elite Status when returning the next year for their title defense.  We will also extend this privledge to the current event record holders in the marathon and half marathon as long as they have the record.  The following points will will determine Elite Status eligibility:  (1) Elite Requirements (2) Defending Champion (3) Current Record Holder (4) Event Director Selection.

Moses, new to the United States last year, has dominated the USATF Minnesota circuit this year.  Native of Kenya, Moses has been running in Europe, Alaska, and over the last year Minnesota.  Running for The Gear Running store in Edina Moses two months away from accepting runner of the year in Minnesota for exceptional performances at different distances, giving him the most points overall.  In addition he most recently ran his 2nd marathon where he ran a 2:23 PB at the Fox Cities Marathon. 

Moses was also winner of the 2005 & 2006 Crazy Horse Half Marathon and current record holder.

Nikki Underwood-McDaniel enjoyed a highly successful running career while competing at Black Hills State University which was capped by becoming the 2004 NAIA National Champion in the womens marathon.  Nikki has enjoyed NAIA All-America honors in both track and cross country in addition to holding top ten all time records at Black Hills State University in every distance from 800M to the Marathon.  Nikki was raised in South Dakota.  She  currently resides and trains in Rapid City, SD.

She was the 2006 champion of the Mt Rushmore Marathon.

Brandon Moen was a 3 time Minnesota All State runner in cross-country and track. After High School, he went to college at Morningside in Sioux City, IA. As a red shirt, he ran sub 25 in the 8K during cross country. In track, he ran a 1:53 half, 3:58 1500 meters, 8:30 3000 meters, and 30:45 10k.

After college, he took some time off and started his training again in focusing on making the 2012 Olympic's in the Marathon. He ran his 1st marathon at the 2006 Fargo Marathon, placing 3rd with a 2:37.

Nikole Johns joins Zoila Gomez and Emily Mortensen as former Adams State University stars who have qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Johns was a nine-time NCAA Division II All-American, and capped her career with a runner-up finish in the 10,000m and sixth-place finish in the 5,000m at the 1998 NCAA Division II Championships. She was a member of four national championship teams while at Adams State. She had immediate success at the marathon distance, running 2:47:24 in her 2002 debut at Grandma's. Her PR remains the 2:43:57 she ran at the 2004 Olympic Trials, in placing 28th overall. She qualifed for her second Olympic Trials at the 2006 ING New York City Marathon.

Johns graduated from Adams State in 1998, and received her MS in occupational therapy from Colorado State in 2001. Johns lives in Fort Collins, CO, with her husband Martin and their two children, Ella and Delaney.

Jill Klaverkamp ran NAIA at USF in cross country and track  where she specialized in the 1500m, 800m and triple jump..  She transferred to South Dakota State University her junior year and ran Division II Cross Country under the coaching of Paul Danger.  She was involved in track and field for the respective university and set the outdoor record in the triple jump in 2000.  Although plagued by injuries much of her freshman and sophomore year, Jill was able to make a strong comeback and was NCAA All-American in the triple jump in 2000.


She appeared on the road racing scene back in 2002 where she has consistently dominated her female, and sometimes, male competition.    An avid competitor, Jill’s other interests include  triathalons  and cycling events.  She resides and trains .in Sioux Falls, SD.  Jill,’s ultimate goal and dream is  to qualify for the 2012 Olympic trials in the womens marathon..  She plans on running her first marathon  in February 2009 in Sarasota, Florida.
